Fungal nail infections, known as ONYCHOMYCOSIS, are the cause of much embarrassment. Left untreated the infection can easily spread to neighbouring nails. If you have any concerns that you may be affected, seek professional advice promptly. Treatments can be effective in the early stages of any infection but can be much harder to achieve a successful outcome if the infection itself has reached the nail bed. 

 

How can you identify a fungal infection?

In the early stages a fungal nail infection is typically seen as a white discolouration of the edges of a nail, but once established the nails gradually thicken and become crumbly appearing more yellow in colour. It usually affects both the nail and the nail bed.

 

A fungal nail infection in the toenail is commonly caused by a fungal skin infection such as Athlete’s Foot. Around a third of people with Athlete’s Foot also have a nail infection. Other typical causes can be footwear that causes the feet to sweat or suffering from sweaty feet on a long-term basis as fungi grow in warm, damp conditions. Fungal nail infections are more predominant with age but sometimes there is no obvious reason.

An initial assessment will be made to determine what form of treatment is best suited to your specific needs and the severity of the ONYCHOMYCOSIS.

An electric file is then used to remove any thickened or discoloured nail and guidance and advice on the best treatment given.

Chemical treatment may be advised depending on the type of infection, usually requiring daily application
