Ingrown toenails are a common problem and occur when the nail starts to curve and grows into the skin of the toe. Most commonly they present on the big toe and affect people of all ages both men and women. The condition can be incredibly painful and there is a possibility of infection and future health issues if not treated promptly. Typical causes are:

 

Incorrect nail cutting

Injury

Genetics

Sweaty feet

Thickened nails in the elderly

Tight-fitting footwear

 

 

First4Feet offers a non-surgical treatment which will resolve the problem for most clients. In extreme cases, where surgery is required, we will refer you to a specialist podiatrist who will be able to perform minor surgery to correct the problem.

 

If you experience an ingrown toenail and suffer from circulatory problems, or have been diagnosed with Diabetes, you must seek our professional advice from the outset.

 

Treatment of ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail will not heal itself and depending on the severity, you may require antibiotics to clear up an infection. Your first appointment will consist of our foot practitioner examining your foot and cutting the nail to alleviate the problem. They will then advise you on further treatment either at home or in clinic.

You will require at least one or two appointments several weeks apart to check how the nail is growing.
